FAQ
What is anime?
Anime is essentially any cartoon that's made
in Japan. Now, don't think that Japanese cartoons are anything
like American ones. American cartoons are generally considered
to be "for kids". Anime, however, can be for all ages,
and often times broaches extremely mature subjects. Subject
matter can range anywhere from simply cute characters with zany
adventures (i.e. Pokemon, Samurai Pizza Cats) to pornography
and satanic rituals. (known as "hentai", these are
actually more rare in Japan than the media makes them out to
be. And don't worry, you won't see any of this stuff at our
meetings. Unless you ask.)
You mean it's not just all chicks running
around in sailor suits?
Quite the contrary. While it's true that there
are girls in sailor suits in quite a few anime, it's only because
those are the traditional suits girls have to wear in Japanese
schools, (don't ask me why) so what's common in Japan is common
in anime. Still, anime with the "sailor girls" as
main characters are in the minority as well.
And you like this stuff?
Yes.
So what do you do at your meetings?
Well, first and foremost, we watch anime. We
try and watch anime of all types, and every semester we hold
our Anime Marathon - 13 straight hours of anime perfection!
We also have Culture segments, where we introduce members to
aspects of Japanese culture, and have Viewer's Choice days,
where you, the members, get to pick what we watch! ^_^ We'll
also answer any questions you may have about anime so ask away,
either at a meeting or via email. So not only is this club about
watching great anime, but it's also informing the public of
all the great anime that's out there!
Do you do anything else besides sitting
around watching anime all day?
You mean there's other stuff? Seriously, though,
we do quite a few other things besides watch anime. We also
have an anime library which you can sign up for, which lets
you borrow all sorts of great anime. (For more details on that,
check out our Library Page) We do a variety of community service
events and also various trips and anime-related events, such
as the annual trip to Chinatown in Toronto and Anime North.
Sounds interesting. When are the meetings?
Our meetings are on the third floor of the Student
Union in the Assembly Hall (Rm 330) at 8:00 PM every Tuesday.
Check out the Events page to see what's going down at our next
meeting!
How do you get your anime?
Well, we mostly get them as donations from personal
collections, or anything the officers have on hand. And of course,
we always have the Anime Library to draw on, which has all sorts
of anime from all kinds of genres and times.
Are there dues or anything?
Not unless you want to have access to the UBAnime
Library. Then all it costs is $7 per semester, or $10 for an
entire year. This will allow you to borrow up to 5 tapes from
our library of over 700 tapes and DVDs per week!
So all I have to do is just show up
and I'm in the club?
Pretty much! If you ever wanted to become an
officer of the club, you'd have to show up to a majority of
the meetings and do some community service. Talk to an officer
for more details. Other than that, we hope to see you there!
